Dr. Julien Hohenstein is Head of Development Process & Digitalization at the BMW Group. In this role, he shapes the group-wide data and AI strategy for research and development as well as production planning and start-up. The focus is on redesigning processes using multi-agent systems (GenAI) and the associated data layer.
For over eight years, Julien has shaped the technological development of the BMW Group, including as Global Head of Production Strategy, Plants Development and Strategic Production System, as Project Manager for the “NEW CLASS” at the Munich headquarters, as Head of Assembly, and as Production Manager Assembly at the main plant in Munich, where he was responsible for both the operational management and strategic development of series production.
During his more than three years in China, he headed assembly planning at the BMW Brilliance Automotive sites in Dadong and Tiexi, was responsible for several vehicle launches, and oversaw the establishment of a greenfield vehicle assembly facility for the BMW 5 Series. Under his leadership, innovations such as additive manufacturing, big data applications, wearables, and exoskeletons were integrated into production there.
Julien earned his doctorate in engine manufacturing in cooperation with leading European automobile manufacturers and worked for several years at the Institute for Production Management, Technology and Machine Tools (PTW) at TU Darmstadt, most recently as a member of the institute’s management team. He holds a degree in industrial engineering from TU Darmstadt.
